Marketing Strategy

  • Viral marketing - short songs for comments on FaceBook, Twitter, YouTube, MySpace, etc. (see Old Spice)

  • Small gigs in London - e.g. Covent Gardens, Brick Lane for a niche London audience
  • Tours with larger British bands: Pistol Youth, Guillemots, Green Day etc.

Things to do for/before treatment

  • Some real location recies
  • Potenial actor photoshoot and meeting/contract
  • Some shot ideas to sketch
  • Make handout featuring 7 bullet points
  • Select ancillary products and how they will all work together to promote band etc

also we need to sort out our labels on the group blog sharpish

Just a bit of an update about that:
  • Angus has definetly confirmed that he'll be free over the half-term to do it and he does understand that it may be a 2-3 day shoot.
  • I have a few ideas for specific shots which I can sketch although one of you might want to do a clearer version if it's impossible to tell what it shows.
  • Concerning ancillary products, I think we're doing an album cover and website and I have a couple of ideas which I can do mock-ups for.
  • We should have a group meeting very soon to make sure everybody knows the plan - is everybody free Thursday lunchtime for a group meeting?
  • We really need to do a test shoot at some point, I'll see if we can film in the school on Friday's inset day.

BLK Feedback to Pitch 2

  • Fast paced
  • Running away from protagonists, around corners, etc.
  • Hard to film on public transport
  • Try filming at Smithfields, Barbican, 2E, modern hi-tech stations, DLR
  • Reference points to be posted
  • Include different heights / textures (e.g. metal / glass)
  • Think about the practicalities of shooting at night / rush hour, etc.

BLK Feedback to pitch 1

  • Very focus/high important on the music and instruments so need very strong frontman for performance
  • Band need to have character and persona so dont look rubbish
  • Angus is poosible but need pictures and to outline time commmitment and teach him and the band lipsyncing skills

  • I think if we get that ready and really strong then but likes idea and song but think PRACTICALITES and reference other videos

  • We need to have another meeting to get up to date so whenever you to are back in school find us so we can have a meeting

  • We are just now dividing up tasks for our treatment ready for around MONDAY (Dom/Kerry)

  • Also we would be pitching first as your group has until TUESDAY to pitch (Claire/Wanda)

Group Meeting 3 (28/09/10)

Claire - 1 + 2
Dominic - 7 + 4
Kerry - 5 + 6
Wanda - 3

For the treatment, there are 7 main parts that need to be split up amongst us:

  1. Who the band/ artist are, their name, their image/ identity
  2. An outline treatment for your early visual ideas for the music video
  3. Detail on the target audience; who are they and how you plan to appeal to them
  4. Your ideas for the marketing plan
  5. Which ancillary tasks you plan to create
  6. The practicalities in more detail - when, where, who, how
  7. Your Plan B if it all goes wrong - brief notes on the back-up track and idea

Extra Target Audience pointers:
  1. How would you describe the target audience for this kind of music? Is there a core and secondary audience?
  2. How would you describe the tastes and attitudes of the target audience? What other media do are they likely to consume? Outline their media consumption profile
  3. What function/pleasures does this kind of music serve to its audience (uses and gratifications)?
  4. Music fans often use music to help them construct their own cultural and visual identity – do/ how do fans of your artist or band do this?
  5. How/ when/ where is this kind of music consumed?

Monday 27 September 2010

Hey Miss!

Could you just confirm that we can use this track?

What Makes a Good Treatment Handout

  • Lots of visuals and images of your ideas
  • Lists
  • Quotes form song to support them
  • Technical language to address specific ares
  • Remember to clearly mention genre and target audience
  • Performance vs narrative

Group Meeting 2 (27/09/10)

Discussed:
  • Kerry's proposal for back up track/idea
  • Dom's proposal for back up track/idea
  • Genre of chosen track
  • Costume/styling of our band
Proposals:
  • (both accepted as back up tracks)
  • Incoporated Kerry's stylised smart/trendy/retro look for the band in main idea (tailored suits with trendy accessories, e.g. waistcoats, trilbys, shades)
  • Want to include Dom's idea of stop motion - possibly to liven up the performance side to the video

Genre:
  • Indie rock (teenage, soft, mainstream rock, slightly upbeat/pop-y)
  • Emo (vocals, guitar style)
  • Similar artist image/style/audience appeal as Fall Out Boy, Panic at the Disco
(trendy/smart style, soft/catchy rock sound)

Costume/Style of band:
  • Smart, tailored yet trendy
  • References from characters such as Doctor Who and bands such as Franz Ferdinand, OK GO and Fall out Boy
  • Appeal to the 'scene' teenagers (festival go-ers, alternative, indie)

Treatment Pitch - I'll Be Careful, You'll Be Dead

Genre: Rock (TO BE SPECIFIED - Possibly indie / alternative / emo)

Band identity: British,

Narrative: Underground (other modes of public transport in London). Man goes around London whilst being pursued by antagonists. Antagonists are picked off individually. Man meets up with rest of band.

Antagonists role is to represent temptations (of drug use). "There is no escape yet / You will find it through your headset"

Audience: Young 14-25, teenage, male
Performance: In a professional-looking studio for grounding.

Costume:
Band in jackets / jumpers / shirts. With accessories, belts, etc. Long hair. Skinny jeans.
Antagonists in black sweatshirts, etc.
Man in normal indie-kid clothes.

Editing:
Cut between narrative and performance. Cutting to the beat.

Technical / Camera:
Close ups on instruments being played. Movement during performance. Costume.

Ideas for the band:
Angus
Tom Ro
Jack x 2

DYM Feedback to Pitch

  • Good track
  • More complicated to film in public (things are out of our control)
  • Shouldn't just be set on the Tube, needs diversity, have the whole of London to film in
  • Followers may not make sense; may be mistaken for muggers or demons (see below for ideas)

Claire and Wanda's Pitches

1) "Been Training Dogs" by Cooper Temple Clause

  •  Band playing upstairs, feral people in basement
  • Feral animals, messed up hair, white contacts, body language/gesture
  • Female guard with key - loose narrative - ends with escape
2) "I'll Be Careful, You'll Be Dead" by My Former Self
  • Indie kid puts on headphones on underground - how he hears music
  • Travels through tube with hooded people (all in black) following him
  • As he progresses the followers drop off in humerous ways one by one
  • End exits tube to meet band
  • Intercut with professional performance
