Applying Goodwin's and Vernallis' Theories

We thought it would be a good idea to try and apply both Goodwin and Vernallis' theories of music videos to our ideas and see whether we are following them

Goodwin
  • We are following the genre characteristics of rock bands by having a performance element to the video with a spontaneous live feel
  • We are trying to create a link between the visuals and the lyrics, for example the idea of escaping through your headset
  • We plan to edit to the pace of my music, creating a link between the visuals and the track
  • The notion of looking will be created through the antagonists watching the lead
  • We will include close ups of the band members performing, especially the front man, following the convention of 'money shots'

Vernallis
  • The narrative is not necessarily complete and will pose unresolved questions as we will not obviously explain the presence of the antagonists
  • The editing will match the beat
  • We will break the rules of continuity editing as the lead will jump through space using graphic matches
  • We will use extreme shot types
  • We will have a running style of framing and movement where the lead goes out of the frame in one shot and comes into frame in another shot
  • There will be gaps in the audiences understanding of the diegeses as they will not know how the lead is travelling between locations

Proposal Handouts

These were the handouts we gave out to go with our group proposals

Antagonist ideas

To increase the scary/weird/creepy style of the antagonists we decided to add some form of mask/facepaint to the characters.

  • Clown style facepaint works well as it is symbolic of creepy circus/nightmare style characters
Insane Clown Posse - inspiration for facepaint ideas

Continued - was doing some research on how facepaint could be used and thought we could take inspiration from these (kerry)

maybe we could have a vegetable theme  - like playing on the idea that people are becoming lazy always playing video games, eating junk etc and turning into vegetables

Also, as we were thinking of leaving the antagonists in a pile at the end of the video we could do a simplified version of this artist's work (Wanda)

Costume Ideas

These sketches represent our initial ideas on what we intended our band to look like in the performance. These cosutmes fit together, however we maintain the principle of portaying individual identities. Each band member represents a different segment of our target audience

Copyright Issues

In an attempt to gain copyright issues for our chosen tracks, we have emailed My Former Self for permission. They are yet to reply as we think due to no longer being signed they don't 'exist' anymore, so there shouldn't be any issues with using their song.

Lyrics Analysis

And this will be
Relatively painless
With an impact like a train wreck        Reference to journeys/trains (Underground)
And you believe
There is no escape yet
You will find it through your headset
Escape from temptations/evil antagonists through the music

Sorry this machine is speeding           'Machine' = Urban (London)
So fast that I threw you off        Running away/escaping antagonists
Words you spread in privacy are killing me
I know I hurt you
But I'll hurt you more if I don't let you go
Refering to the negative effects that the antagonists represent

My bags are packed
Train ride to a guilt trip         Refers to journeys/trains
Recited, like words you memorized from movie scripts
But the scene we cannot edit
And when the credits end
No one knows where happy endings just might end up next

Sorry this machine is speeding
So fast that I threw you off
Words you spread in privacy are killing me
I know I hurt you
But I'll hurt you more if I don't let you go

Every little thing's amounted to nothing but here I am
Nothing = the antagonists aren't actually a threat, you can avoid them

Feedback to pitch (dom and kerry)

-i think she quite the idea generally as there was nothing that was majorly critised
-disliked the idea of the antagonists in HOODIES but instead have masks or face paints to make it more quirky - agreed it needed more development
- also thought the FOLLOWING should be developed to the antagonoist just being around and staring at the snger in order to make it more weird and surreal
-liked the female in the band
-thought alot of effort had gone into the presentation

we will take on board this feedback and try and adapt and improve our idea - but it is encouraging if there were no major flaws identified

i dont think our pitch will need to be majorly changed for tomorrows presentation (good luck claire and wanda)

Social networking ideas good - could set up Facebook, Twitter

Will the crowds be a problem for the narrative? Should probably avoid tourist hotspots, find alternatives not in the centre of London

Seward Studio can't be used over half-term, possibly on Saturday: 8AM to 2PM. Lighting would require somebody else to help out. Could be better to go for other studio but would need to light by ourselves - look up if studios provide lights.

Check previous years' blogs for an idea of studio hire - Voodoo Child / Mel and Tania - studios, in Barnet.

£80 is good for a day but should do test shoots in the Seward. Plan a lot.

Antagonists need work: break down the lyrics and work out where they come in and why they do. Different styling options. Make the concept stronger so we know what they represent.

Develop and come back to.

Work it out, blog and inform BLK.
